Covenant Athletics help to develop the player as a whole person. Using athletics and the team concept helps athletes to develop their lives as Christians, allows them the opportunity to learn to work with others, and encourages them to live a healthy life. Covenant team sports allow the athlete to bridge the concept of using his/her strengths while working with others to obtain a goal. One important life lesson that athletics can provide is that the Christian life is about the journey as well as the destination.
The Cougar Football team is committed to this goal and allows Middle and High School boys to use their athletic abilities for the glory of God.
Head Coach Robert McCready just completed his third year at Covenant, with his teams compiling a 25-6 record and becoming a football power. ”Coach” played for the legendary Shug Jordan at Auburn and honed his coaching skills at a number of schools including a term with Dave Hunter at Brookwood High School in Snellville as that school grew in prominence as a football power. Having served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, Coach brings a strong military approach to his position and the players and school respond in a big way. He came to Covenant in 2007 and shored up a program looking for leadership. His 2008 squad went 7-2 and was Runner up in the ICSGA North Region, playing the eventual State Championship in the second round of the playoffs. In just his third year heading the program, he led his 2009 squad to a 10-1 record and the 2009 ICSGA State Championship, defeating Grace Baptist Christian School in the championship game. Coach will defer the success of the program to the boys and his staff. But it is apparent that his leadership, his demand for excellence in all areas of a student’s life and his love for his “babies”, as he calls all his students, carries a strong message to the student body as a whole. His players are proud to play for “Coach”. He is the type of man you want in your son’s life.
The 2009 team included four All State players including senior Aaron Cline, sophomore D J Roman, sophomore Jordan Argo and senior Tyler Bliss, who was also named most valuable player in the championship game. 2010 looks promising as the bulk of the championship team returns.
It will be another exciting year of Cougar Football! Be a part of it!
